ExperienceAlthough I graduated from Columbia University only a short time ago, I have been tutoring as both a professional and a volunteer for almost a decade. When I tutor, I try to strike a balance between giving my students a challenge and being supportive of their efforts. One of the ways that students get ahead is if they have high expectations of their performance, but the other side involves me being there to help them, and to offer support and encouragement. I have experience teaching in classroom settings as well as working one-on-one with my students. My tutoring subjects cover the whole academic spectrum, and include many sciences like biology and physics and several levels of math, from pre-calculus to AP Algebra. I also help with college test preparation, because getting into a good school is important to help students get ahead. While tutoring, I work with my students to make sure they have a thorough understanding of how all the pieces fit together, and that they are not just repeating memorized facts. When a student comes up with an answer, I ask them to defend that answer, which helps them justify their reasoning to me. This helps them learn the way their own mind works best. When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy reading science fiction and fantasy novels, playing board and video games, and listening to music.
